To estimate the cost of using a sign, its width is not enough. You need to know its electrical power and the duration for which it remains lit. The price of electricity then comes into play in the calculation. This guide presents a simple method with a clearly identified fictitious example, then explains what data to request to obtain an estimate related to your own installation.

Start with the power actually used

Consumption depends on the power absorbed by the assembly and the lighting duration. The maximum power indicated on a power supply shows its capacity; it does not necessarily represent what the sign consumes when operating.

For a reliable estimate, use documented data for the complete configuration or a measurement taken under safe conditions by a competent person. An animation or a variation in intensity can change consumption over time.

Calculate energy in kilowatt-hours

The calculation is as follows: power in watts, divided by 1,000, multiplied by the number of hours of use. Let's take a fictitious example: a sign consuming 100 W and used six hours a day consumes 0.6 kWh per day. Over thirty identical days, this represents 18 kWh.
